Facebook is Huge - Bigger than the Internet was in 2004

We all know Facebook is huge, but these stats blow me away. Pingdom wrote up some research recently, pointing out that Facebook now has as many users as the entire internet did in 2004. I'm sure you've heard the statistic that if Facebook were a country it would be the third largest in the world, and that statistic still stands even with the current 800 million active users. What you probably don't know is if you are looking at number of internet users by continent (not just country), Facebook now comes in second, behind only Asia.

In fact, Facebook now accounts for 38% of the entire current Internet population, and is more than 3700% larger than the internet population of Oceania/Australia. That's right - over three thousand seven hundred percent.

Looking at country populations, Facebook is behind only India and China, and is a whopping 2.5 times the size of the U.S. population.

Facebook user base vs. country populations

Do you think these explosive growth patterns can continue? Will Facebook become larger than the population of any country in the world?
