Pinterest and The Social Media Business Equation

20 Feb 2012 / 0 Comments / in B2B, B2C, marketing, Social Media, Social Networking, The Social Media Business Equation/by Meredith Darling

Meredith Darling | @merdar

Like we said in a previous blog, “Pinterest is a growing bookmarking site that lets you tag websites based on images, and sort those images onto boards.” Confused? Don’t over think it- it’s a bunch of pretty pictures all in one place. Boards can be of anything you want, Bucket List, Places to Visit, Fitness Motivation, Junk, Crafts, Reading List, Squirrels… the options are only limited by your imagination (excluding nudity and hate). The site launched via invite-only in 2010 and managed to stay mostly under the radar until a few months ago, but now the word is out.

Named 2012′s hottest website by Pete Cashmore, CEO and founder of Mashable, Pinterest has grown so much that it ties Twitter and Google for third place in online referral traffic at 3.6% (poor MySpace is still clenching for dear life at 0.01%). That’s no surprise when you consider that visitors increased 4,000% from June-December of last year, with 7 million in December alone. These numbers are what has got companies drooling.Shareaholic, Pinterest, Social Media Delivered, social media

Here are the facts on Pinterest: people love it, it’s growing, it gets people to your website. So the big question remains,

Should your business be on Pinterest?

Social Media Delivered is the first to admit that every social media network isn’t right for every company. You have to find what works best for your product or service. Pinterest is almost entirely visual, aside from the captions and comments that, if you’re like me, no one really reads. My feelings are if your company has found success on Facebook they will on Pinterest. Why? Just like on Facebook, users on Pinterest do not want to be sold to. They are there in most cases for reasons outside their professional life, which is why it is important to be careful about what you pin. That’s where The Social Media Business Equation comes in.

Yes. Now what?

The Social Media Business Equation applies to all social media networks; Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, and yes, Pinterest. No one likes that friend that only talks about himself and never lends a helping hand, so don’t think of Pinterest as another advertising medium. As with all social media, it is another way to connect with your clients, and that is why the equation works perfectly here.

Real Simple, Pinterest, Social Media Delivered, social media

20% Inform- share pictures that you know will be enjoyed by your prospects and client base. Take this example from Real Simple magazine. They have a board dedicated to “New Uses for Old Things.” On it you’ll find interesting uses for every day items you may have thrown away otherwise. Real Simple knows that their subscribers will find this interesting and helpful because organization advice is part of what the magazine offers. Pin things related to your industry. For example, a hotel or airlines could pin travel tips. A bank could pin images of how the design of paper money has changed over time. A supermarket could pin wellness tips. An energy company could pin Earth city lights view from space.

Zales, Pinterest, Social Media Delivered, social media

20% Entertain-post quirky and humorous photos or videos that apply to your industry. Zales has a board dedicated to love song videos, the idea being that you feel emotion when watching them. Other entertain ideas include inspirational quotes, memes, jokes, amateur video taken at the office, get creative! Your customers want to be friends with you, and everybody wants a friend who can make them laugh.

Southwest Airlines, Pinterest, Social Media Delivered, social media

40% Interact- ask questions, take a poll, request fans share their experiences, repin/like pictures, and make comments. How do you do this by pinning a picture you ask? Take a lesson from Southwest Airlines. The picture you pin doesn’t always have to ask the question, but it should inspire them to answer it. A car dealership could pin a picture of the world’s fastest car and ask “What song  would you listen to at 267 mph?” Remember: you are asking questions to connect with your customers and spark a conversation.

Lowe's, Pinterest, Social Media Delivered, social media

20% Convert to Business- you’ve taught them something, made them laugh, got them thinking, now it’s appropriate to ask for business. Lowe’s did a great job of this with their “Unique Gift Cards” board. Why would someone pin this you ask? Maybe they find it funny, maybe they are going bald, maybe they have a gift giving board or a to do list board. Maybe they just love Lowe’s. One of their gift cards was pinned and liked by 16 people. Those people have a total of 1,025 followers. Something to think about.

Google Hangouts – And What They Could Mean For Business

16 Feb 2012 / 0 Comments / in Blog, business, Google+, marketing, Social Media, Social Networking/by Angelo
Angelo Benito Fernandez – Spadaro | @abfsra

Over the past few years there have been amazing advances in video-related technology that now allow us to easily produce videos and have live conversations via video mediums. People are becoming more acceptant of the idea of using video to communicate with businesses, friends, celebrities, co-workers and whoever else is online at the time. Today you can join a “Google Hangout” to video-chat live with up to 9 other people and it allows anyone in the Hangout to share their computer screen.

YouTube Preview Image

What makes Google Hangouts such a great tool for the work place is also how simple it is to use. What these Hangouts mean for business on the most basic level is that conference calls or video conferences just got a whole lot easier (and it’s free). Having a robust video-service for meetings and chats will set you apart from all your competitors.

These video chats can easily be recorded for anyone who missed out on the meeting or if you want the meeting to be available later for anyone who wants to look it over. That feature is great for future employees who want to know what a typical meeting/chat is like before they participate in one.

The “Hangout with Extras” also makes brainstorming sessions and group project meetings much easier because you can share and edit documents at the same time. This is wonderful when you’ve got different co-workers that are in different places whether it be another floor of the same building or on the other side of the world.

Other ideas:

  • A simple example would be the traditional interview process we have in use today. When interviewing a potential intern or employee you could video chat the first time around instead of a phone call.

  • Virtual training for in-house and external use would also be a breeze using Hangouts because of the real-time screen-sharing capabilities so you could show employees or clients how to get something done while they follow you and can ask questions along the way.
  • For external use these Hangouts could also end up being the future of customer service. Much like with the virtual training people could call in with their issues or troubles and actually “show” the representative what is going wrong instead of trying to describe it over the phone or through chat.

  • The Hangout could also be a great marketing and advertising tool because of the inherent exclusivity with the 10-people maximum. You could run various contests and promotions for and make it only good for “first 10 people” kind of thing. Perhaps they could get a sneak peek at a certain product/announcement your company is going to make or maybe they get an exclusive interview with a person of interest.

This is only the beginning though, Google is already toying around with Google Hangout On Air which will still only allow 10 people to participate on the video-chat but anyone else who wants to see what’s going on can watch the live stream of the video chat going on which will open up even more possibilities. The Hangout feature is already available on Android phones and will soon be available on the iPhone meaning that these video chats and conferences will be even more convenient than they already are.

In 5 years maybe Google Hangouts will be obsolete, but video-chatting will not. Video chatting is simply the next step in the evolution of communication, we’ve gone from the telegraph to the phone to online chats and now video chats. Every step in that chain has made communicating faster and/or more personal to better and more closely recreate a conversation in person.

Online Dating: Love, Social Media, and the New Rules

  • love and social media

13 Feb 2012 / 1 Comment / in Facebook, Social Media, Social Networking/by Brandie Broihier

Brandie Broihier | @Brandienic

Online dating. Two small words with the power to evoke overwhelming emotion in the hearts of the uninitiated. Built to help the lonely find The One (and turn a handsome profit in the process), online dating sites are essentially specialized social media platforms. You have a profile, you connect to people, and you (try to) build relationships. Sound familiar?

When dating websites first popped up, they faced criticism and disbelief as they weren’t believed to possess staying power. But online dating is no longer a trend: it is as common as many traditional methods of meeting a potential partner.

It is interesting to consider the stigma still attached to online dating when it has become a billion dollar industry with proven results. An estimated 80% of people know someone (or themselves) who has used online dating, and online dating websites in the USA take in $1.8 billion each year.  Just as social media is a cultural norm that no longer surprises anyone, so too has online dating become integrated into daily life.

Social media is more important to love and relationships than ever before.  Love and dating in the age of social media is here to stay.  However, don’t take this as an indication that traditional values and dating norms no longer matter. 80% of singles still prefer a follow-up phone call after a date.

And if you are still unsure, consider this gem of a phrase: “If your significant other claims to never check out your Facebook profile, change your relationship status to “single” and wait 5 minutes.”

Social Media Case Study: Pink Elephant and IT Blogging

  • Social Media Case Study: Pink Elephant and IT Blogging

The following is an excerpt from The Social Media Business Equation: Using Online Connections to Grow Your Bottom Line by  CEO of Social Media Delivered, Eve Mayer Orsburn. Eve will be speaking at Pink Elephant’s  16th Annual International IT Service Management Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada – February 19-22, 2012.

Organization

Pink Elephant

pink elephant social media logo

Background

Pink Elephant is a privately owned, Toronto-based company established by president David Ratcliffe and CEO Fatima Cabral. Their primary focus is providing information technology infrastructure library (ITIL) consultation and education. Operating through many offices across the globe, the company is the world’s number-one supplier of ITIL and IT Service Management (ITSM) conferences, education, and consulting services. To date, close to 200,000 IT professionals have benefited from Pink Elephant’s expertise. Pink Elephant has been championing the growth of ITIL worldwide since its inception in 1989.

Business Need

To build networks and business.

Social Media Solution

Implement multiple company blogs to share information.

Business Result

Increased traffic to blog and increased awareness of the company in almost every country in the world.

What Actually Happened

Pink Elephant has been an industry leader for more than 20 years and can claim 85 of the U.S. Fortune 100 companies as clients. In the simplest terms, they provide consulting and guidance to corporate IT departments. In the current state of the IT industry with its increasing risk, easy access to corporate data, and privacy and security issues heralded by web and mobile technologies Pink Elephant has distinguished themselves as experts in IT management.

In spite of the stellar company’s reputation, President David Ratcliffe recognizes the need to spread awareness and education about their brand and expertise. Particularly in B2B, network building is a vital part of growing business. To help achieve this, Mr. Ratcliffe began personally blogging six years ago. The main purpose of his blogging was to share information and advice. As he points out, “If you can impress in people that you are trustworthy and give them advice and share your experience, they will beat a path to your door for more.”

David writes his own blogs, and shares everything from business advice and videos to pictures and insight about what goes on at Pink Elephant and within the industry. He gives away free tips and resources. The blog provides a place for his personality to really shine through and for people to get to know what kind of guy runs the company. Statistics on David’s blog show that he now receives visitors from nearly every country in the world.

Other workers within the company are also encouraged to blog and share about their aspect of the business. David recognizes that customers really appreciate insight into the company and the industry, and emphasizes that “people want to buy from people they like.” If any Pink Elephant employee gets good attention on their own through blogging or other efforts, then it will reflect well on the company. For these reasons, everyone at the company is encouraged to use their own name and put a personal face to what they do.

Even the company mascot, Pinky the Elephant, was set up with a company blog. Each person who attends a Pink Elephant conference is given a small pink elephant, and the Pinky blog encourages visitors to submit photos of their pink elephants taken in different locations worldwide. This is a fun way to bring awareness and grow participation for the company.

The way David Ratcliffe sees it, “Social media is a godsend, the perfect way for us to interact with our competitors, our customers, and our employees.” There has never been any expectation of or focus on ROI for Pink Elephant’s social media endeavors, only relationships and communication. As of early 2011, the company has not even yet created an official social media policy despite communicating in the social space for six years. David simply advises (very strongly) everyone in the company to “Never, never say anything critical, publicly, about our competitors.”

Pink Elephant began exploring the possibilities of other social media platforms in late 2009. There was some internal debate between Mr. Ratcliffe and his wife, CEO Fatima Cabral, about why Pink Elephant should launch a social media initiative. At one point David asked Fatima, “When you booked our last vacation, where did you go? What site did you use?”

She replied, “TripAdvisor.com.”

“Exactly. You didn’t go to the hotel’s home page or the airline’s main site. You don’t want to hear from them how great they are. You want to hear from everyone else how great they are. That’s why we need to be on social media.”

Social Media Super Bowl: the Year of Brand Engagement

  • Social Media Superbowl: the Year of Brand Engagement

02 Feb 2012 / 0 Comments / in B2C, business, Event, Facebook, foursquare, Geolocation, Google+, marketing, News & Stuff, Social Media, Social Networking, Twitter/by Brandie Broihier

Brandie Broihier | @brandienic

As you sit down this Sunday with your chips & dip, smart phone and wings, you’ll be joining the incredibly connected world that has become Super Bowl culture. Super Bowl Sunday, 2012 is leaps and bounds beyond the games of years past.

We will see brand engagement soar through social connectivity at the biggest television advertising event of the year. ”The big goal is to be the most connected Super Bowl ever, we think we’re going to be able to achieve that,” said Chairman of the Super Bowl Host Committee, Mark Miles.

Social Media Command Center

For the past two weeks, a team of nearly fifty social media experts have been working around the clock to interact in real time with fans arriving in Indianapolis for this year’s Super Bowl.  This Social Media Super Team will provide directions, Indianapolis local entertainment suggestions and other important information (such as what to do in case of an emergency at the stadium).

They will be able to pick up on keyword phrases like “parking is awful” and respond quickly with help. The command center has taken more than a year of planning to achieve and will run on over a mile of ethernet cable to fuel its success. From the main Super Bowl XLVI site, fans can access the social media command center’s activity through its management of the Super Bowl Facebook page, Flickr and Twitter accounts and the site’s blog.

Coca-Cola Polar Bowl

Coca-Cola’s famous polar bears have a new toy: a TV.   For the first time, Super Bowl fans can watch the polar bears react in real time to the game. Not only will the polar bears (who sport team scarves to support the Giants and the Patriots) comment about the game, the Coca-Cola polar bears will share their live reactions to the commercials, an event nearly as anticipated as the game itself.

Fan-Made Commercial Contests

Super Bowl anticipation has been underway for months, with the past few weeks gearing up to record-setting levels of communication about the “other” game: fan-made commercials that air in million dollar time slots.

Doritos hit the ground running again this year with Crash the Super Bowl.  As the pioneer of brand engagement via Super Bowl advertising, we’ve seen rejected ads go viral weeks before expected.

Take this already famous “rejected Doritos ad” for example:

The Super Bowl is, well, the Super Bowl of Advertising.  Brand engagement via contests continues to grow as an ingenious way to converse with customers and preserve the loyalty of consumers.

Social Media holds a sweet spot in the hearts of sports fans. 2011 saw record-setting tweets about Tim Tebow (9,420 tweets per second). And the only Facebook status that topped number of posts about the Packer’s win at last years game? The death of Osama bin Laden.

The 46th Super Bowl will take place on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 ET on NBC.

How Employers are Considering Social Media Screening for Hiring Candidates

  • How Employers are Considering Social Media Screening for Hiring

01 Feb 2012 / 0 Comments / in business, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Social Media, Social Networking, Twitter/by Rosalyn
By Rosalyn Eishen | rosalynchoo
If you think employers are solely relying on your resume and cover letter to make hiring judgements, think again.  Now so more than ever, people are looking at social media sites to aid in the process of screening candidates for hiring.

Just what exactly are hiring managers looking for while digging around Facebook and LinkedIn? Many want to find that the candidate has great communication skills, creativity, well-roundedness, professionalism, etc.  Also, they’re looking to see if the candidate is mentioned by others in a positive way to serve as a reference.

Somethings that could land a resume in the recycle bin may reflect that the candidate isn’t doing everything right on their personal social media profiles.  Things like too many provocative or inappropriate photographs, content about them drinking or using drugs, bad-mouthing previous employer, co-workers or clients, showing poor communication skills, discriminatory comments, etc. are all no-no’s.  Many forget that people are watching you, whether you want them to or not. After all, a majority of social media content is public information.

We found a great infographic from Mindflash to illustrate how hiring managers screen candidates through social media.

mindflash infographic
While social networking is a great way to make connections with potential job opportunities and promote one’s personal brand, job seekers must ensure they are using these sites to their advantage by conveying a professional image and underscoring their qualifications.
